What Is a Mouse Hz Test?
A mouse Hz test is an online tool that measures how many times per second your mouse reports its position to your computer. That reporting frequency is the mouse polling rate, measured in Hertz (Hz). A mouse running at 1000Hz sends position data 1,000 times every second - once every millisecond.

Average Hz vs Maximum Hz | Which Number Should You Trust?
Your maximum reading is the peak the sensor hit for a single instant. It looks impressive but tells you very little.
The average is the number that matters. It reflects the rate your system actually receives during sustained movement, which is what affects aim and tracking. A mouse that peaks at 1000Hz but averages 640Hz is not delivering a 1ms response in practice.
Stability matters just as much. Two mice can both average 1000Hz while one holds a flat line and the other swings between 400Hz and 1200Hz. The steady one will feel noticeably better in game.
Why Your Mouse Hz Test Shows a Lower Rate
A result below your advertised rate usually has a simple cause:
- You moved too slowly. Many mice reduce reporting when idle or moving gently to save power. Move faster and continuously.
- The polling rate is set low in software. Razer Synapse, Logitech G HUB, SteelSeries GG, and Corsair iCUE all default some profiles to 125Hz or 500Hz.
- USB hub or front-panel port. Plug directly into a rear motherboard port. Shared hubs throttle bandwidth.
- Wireless interference or low battery. Many wireless mice drop their polling rate automatically as the battery drains.
- Background CPU load. Video encoding, browser tabs, and overlays all steal the interrupts your mouse needs.
- Browser limits. Chrome and Firefox coalesce pointer events. Above roughly 1000Hz, a browser test will read lower than a hardware-level tool.

Does a Higher Polling Rate Actually Help?
Going from 125Hz to 1000Hz is a real, noticeable upgrade - you cut response time from 8ms to 1ms. Beyond 1000Hz, returns shrink fast. Moving to 4000Hz or 8000Hz saves under a millisecond, and it costs you something: every report is a CPU interrupt.
So 8000Hz can raise CPU usage and reduce frame rates in CPU-heavy games on older systems. On a 60Hz or 144Hz monitor, most players will not feel the difference at all. For the vast majority of setups, a stable 1000Hz beats an unstable 8000Hz.
Mouse Polling Rate vs DPI
These get confused constantly, but they control different things. Polling rate is how often your mouse reports its position - a timing measurement in Hz. DPI (Dots Per Inch) is how far the cursor travels when you move the mouse one inch - a sensitivity measurement.
Raising DPI makes your cursor move further per inch. Raising the polling rate makes your cursor move sooner. You can run 400 DPI at 1000Hz, or 3200 DPI at 125Hz. They are set independently, and this mouse polling rate test only measures the first one.
